Look for cast iron or powder-coated kettlebells with a smooth handle and a round bell. Avoid vinyl-coated ones that are more square, they’re often bulky and harder to grip and manouver properly.
As for size, a good starting point for most beginners is:
8kg or 10kg if you’re new to strength training
12kg or 16kg if you’ve been training and feel strong
